A community with a concern for the teaching of public health that cuts across organisational boundaries, recognises all levels of the workforce and of education and is serious about learning how it can be done better, through its commitment to sharing knowledge, working together on problems and setting up projects to test ideas, challenge understanding and make improvements.

Our Vision

Learning for Public Health will increase the standard, range and availability of public health training in the West Midlands, in order to improve the health of the region’s population.

  1. CONSULTATION EVENT: JSNAs & Joint Health and WellBeing Strategies Guidance

    A half day event to consider the recently issued guidance on Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA) and joint health and wellbeing strategies. JSNAs and the resulting strategies will be drivers for commissioning and delivery of improved outcomes for local populations. This event will be of interest to Directors of Adult Social Services, Public Health and Children Services or their representatives, JSNA Leads, Clinical Commissioning Group Leads and representatives from local Health and Wellbeing Boards including the Voluntary and Community sector.

  2. Community Asset Based Approach - Seminar 1 Online registration

    This FREE 2 part learning seminar is underpinned by the principles of 'Assets Based Approaches' and 'Salutogenesis' described in the publication 'A glass half-full: how as asset approach can improve community health and well-being' (J Foot & T Hopkins - 2010) and the forthcoming publication 'What makes us healthy? The asset approach in practice: evidence, action, evaluation'.

    Workshop one will be aimed at practitioners new to the asset based approach or those with little knowledge of its principles and application to health and well-being. It will cover the history, basic principles and application of asset based working.

  3. Community Asset Based Approach - Seminar 2 Online registration

    This FREE 2 part learning seminar is underpinned by the principles of 'Assets Based Approaches' and 'Salutogenesis' described in the publication 'A glass half-full: how as asset approach can improve community health and well-being' (J Foot & T Hopkins - 2010) and the forthcoming publication 'What makes us healthy? The asset approach in practice: evidence, action, evaluation'.

    Workshop two will be a very 'hands-on' full-day seminar for practitioners wishing to incorporate as asset based approach into their work on health and well-being. The workshop will explain the application of asset principles in a practical way and allow participants to try out three asset based approaches.

  4. Developing an Asset Based Approach to Community Commissioning Online registration

    This FREE seminar is underpinned by the principles of 'Assets Based Approaches' and 'Salutogenesis' described in the publication 'A glass half-full: how as asset approach can improve community health and well-being' (J Foot & T Hopkins - 2010) and the forthcoming publication 'What makes us healthy? The asset approach in practice: evidence, action, evaluation'.

    This workshop will aim to make the case that an 'Asset Based' or 'salutogenic' approach should underpin any work that aims to improve health and well-being or challenge health inequalities. It will highlight this approach's particular relevance to JSNA, HWBs and outcomes based commissioning.

  7. An Introduction to Health Impact Assessment (HIA) Booking has now closed

    This FREE workshop will explain what HIA is and how it should be delivered. It will outline the steps of an HIA with reference to a case study; how causal diagrams are used along with evidence to help predict future health consequences of decisions. Through a combination of teaching, discussion and group work, the session will cover the stages in HIA, the different levels of HIA and provide further information on HIA. Participants will be asked to work through 2 of the HIA stages using real proposals that have been subject to HIA’s.

  8. Partners in Public Health:Public Health Professionals and Local Authority Regulatory Services

    This 2 part learning opportunity explore the roles of the wider public health workforce in the emerging public health system and explains how LARS and the Public Health Function support health and wellbeing. Over the 2 days you will also build understanding of each others roles, gain insight into “Marmot” life stages, and find out more about existing successful partnership working. You will also have opportunity to Identify priority settings/life stages for joint working.

    Both days are explicitly inter-professional with learning for and between two parts of public health - professionals working in public health functions and those working in LARS.

    These workshops will equip those working in housing and public health to make the most of reforms in both sectors and to maximise the potential for collaboration to the benefit of our communities. They build on recent research, guidance and a learning event focused on the interrelationship between housing and health - outputs from this event are available on the Public Health Transition page.

  10. West Midlands Communities for Health Network: Projects Evaluation

    This report summarises the work done to date and provides an evaluation of the numerous Communities for Health led projects across local areas in the West Midlands. A key aim of the report is to provide future direction and support for commissioners in deciding where and how to invest public health resources to improve the health of our communities and reduce health inequalities. The report from the network identifies and shares good practice, highlights positive outcomes and provides important information for commissioners and providers about public heath practice that is effective, efficient and is expected to have maximum impact. The West Midlands Communities for Health Network is hosted by Sandwell Local Authority in conjunction with Learning for Public Health, West Midlands.
