Getting it right for children, young people and families

A new report on school nursing sets out an ambition for visible, accessible and confidential services that provide early help and extra support to children and young people. School nurses have a crucial role to play in healthcare during school years providing advice on obesity, teenage pregnancy and the harms caused by drugs and alcohol. The report, Getting it right for children, young people and families, includes plans to raise the profile of the school nurse and give them a greater role in improving care for children and young people. Applying behavioural insight to health

The Behavioural Insights team in the Cabinet Office publishes ‘Applying behavioural insight to health’, an academically slanted paper that looks at methods that Government can use to influence people’s behaviour without imposing bans or fines. The paper sets out numerous examples of where local authorities, charities, and private sector organisations are developing responses that encourage healthier behaviours, and demonstrates how the Behavioural Insights Team has been working with partners to introduce new and innovative policy solutions. The research is designed as a tool in helping ministers and officials to develop policy that is less intrusive, imposes fewer (if any) costs on business and society and is often more effective than traditional regulatory or legislative interventions. The Behavioural Insight Team is a small team of civil servants and academic experts, based in the Cabinet Office and led by Dr David Halpern.

The Role of Local Government in Promoting Wellbeing

The report highlights best practice of pioneering councils and suggests opportunities in Big Society. It argues that focusing on wellbeing can help local government respond to significant reductions in its finances, by preventing long-term problems and ensuring that positive outcomes are achieved efficiently. This will make the most of the unprecedented opportunity councils are experiencing to reshape their role. The report highlights numerous examples of councils who are doing pioneering work in this area, from all parts of the UK.

Child and Maternal Health Observatory (ChiMat)

Home Energy Advice Tamworth (HEAT)

HEAT (Home Energy Advice Tamworth) was launched by Tamworth Borough Council in August 2009. Since then many private residents in Tamworth have accessed this free and impartial advice service to learn more about how they can stop wasting energy at home and start saving money.

HEAT provides information on government grants for free or discounted home energy efficiency measures such as loft insulation, cavity wall insulation and the replacement of broken or faulty heating systems. These measures could be free if you are 70 or older or in receipt of qualifying benefits.

Mrs Perkins had her walls and loft insulated following a call to HEAT - click on the attached link to watch a short film about how having the measures installed has made a difference to the energy efficiency of her home, and made her home warmer and has had an impact on her sons asthma.

If you would like any further information then please contact Claire Keeling, Housing Strategy Officer at Tamworth Borough Council on 01827 709286.

Under the Radar - A study of voluntary and community organisations not on the business or charities register

Advantage West Midlands commissioned Regional Action West Midlands (RAWM) to undertake a programme of research, which seeks to provide a comprehensive position statement of the third sector in the West Midlands.
As part of this research programme, RAWM is specifically seeking to provide a more comprehensive overview of the third sector by focusing on organisations which are not currently on the Business or Charities Register, but who nevertheless provide much needed services within local communities. Throughout this report these organisations are referred to as ‘under the radar’ organisations. In particular, the research is seeking to understand more about the nature of these organisations (for example, services provided, beneficiary groups and structure and governance) and their support needs.

The Economic Footprint of the voluntary and community sector in the West Midlands - Executive Summary

Voluntary and community organisations have long been recognised as a vital ingredient of growing, sustainable communities, but hard evidence of their impact continues to be difficult to measure. This study provides robust evidence of the economic and social contributions made by the voluntary and community sector to the West Midlands. It follows earlier research, published in 2003, and RAWM is grateful to funders and partners for supporting this updated study.

Staying Healthy Care Pathway Group - Public Health Skills & Careers Framework - Final Report

This is the report of a study conducted by the Applied Research Group in Public Health at Coventry University commissioned by the Staying Healthy Care Pathway Group and undertaken in collaboration with the West Midlands Teaching Public Health Network and the NHS West Midlands Workforce Deanery.

The study aimed to assess the extent of public health teaching and training currently being provided within the Region and to map this provision against the competencies established in the Public Health Skills and Careers Framework. The study was conducted through distribution of an e-survey to all Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) and Colleges of Further Education (CFEs) in the Region seeking information on course and module provision and asking that this be mapped against the framework. This was supplemented by information collected through key informant interviews.
