Interpretation
Number of households is an indication of number of household groups. Where households are the unit of service or analysis this number may be more relevant than the population.
Statistical methods
Estimates and projections of household numbers are produced by Department of Communities and Local Government. The Estimate/projection is based on the estimated mid year population and assumptions about the composition of households.
Further details are given in Communities and Local Government Revised 2004-based Household Projections: Methodology and Sources of Data (no longer available from www.communities.gov.uk/documents/housing/doc/707660.doc)
Quality of indicator
The estimate is dependent on quality of the population estimates / projections. It will thus get less reliable as one moves from the census year. It is also dependent on the assumptions made about composition of households.
Timeliness
New estimates/projections are produced each year.
