5 A Day : Just Eat More

The Government led 5 A DAY programme (www.5aday.nhs.uk) has been established in the West Midlands for over 4 years and includes:

  • The School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme
  • Nine Community 5 A DAY Initiatives

The programme aims to increase fruit and vegetable consumption by:

  • Increasing awareness and changing attitudes towards eating fruit and vegetables
  • Improving access and availability of fruit and vegetables.

Tackling Obesity is a key priority of the White Paper, 'Choosing Health' and the 5 A DAY programme plays an important role in meeting a number of the objectives outlined in the delivery plan.

National School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme

The School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme is a national voluntary scheme that entitles every child aged four to six in LEA maintained schools to a free piece of fruit or vegetable every school day.

There is currently a 98.4% uptake of the scheme across the region with 236,148 pieces of fruit being distributed each day.

The scheme also includes resource packs for every particpating school, which contain a range of materials to support the running of the School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme as well as a curriculum pack, with Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1 and out of classroom resources.

There are 3 School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme Area Coordinators in post:

  • Siu-Ann Pang for Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Stoke-on-Trent, Telford and Wrekin and Worcestershire
  • Sandra Passmore for Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Solihull, Walsall, Wolverhampton and Warwickshire
  • Louise O'Connor for training and support for the scheme resources and the Food In Schools Toolkit (www.foodinschools.org) for Coventry, Herefordshire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire.

A fourth area coordinator is being recruited for training in the remainder of the region.
