Food in Schools Programme

The Food in Schools (FiS) programme is a joint venture between the Department of Health (DH) and the Department for Education and Skills (DfES). A whole range of nutrition-related activities and projects are being developed as part of the programme, to complement and add value to existing healthier food initiatives in schools.

Information on this work is available on the food in schools website at www.foodinschools.org.

The website provides valuable guidance and resources for anyone working in or with a school on food related activities throughout the school day, including teachers, parents, school governors, head teachers, pupils and health professionals. There is information on a broad range of activities from guidance on how to set up a school food partnership or a healthier breakfast club to details of local Healthy School's support networks.

A core component of the programme included the development of a Food in Schools Toolkit which is available online or can be ordered from Prolog tel: 08701 555455 quote: 267050

The Healthier Breakfast Club research was undertaken by ContinYou (www.continyou.org.uk).

A 'Food in Schools: Improving Health, Improving Schools Conference' was held on 10th March 2004 to launch the programme.

Presentations from the event are available online (see useful links - Schools - Food in Schools presentations).

The eight Food in Schools pilot projects have been fully evaluated, and as a result, on 30th March 2005, the Department of Health launched the new Food in Schools Toolkit. The Toolkit is designed to support, guide and inspire schools in taking a 'whole-school' approach to healthy eating and drinking with the help of key learnings from the over 300 schools who took part in the pilots.

Food in Schools Programme newsletters are available from the Newsletters page.
