West Midlands Breast Screening Programme

Outcome Measures: KC62

The KC62 report is a standard statistical Korner report that the Department of Health requires from each NHS Breast Screening Service. Reports relating to screening activity during the previous financial year (1st April to 31st March) are produced each October. It is the responsibility of the Breast Screening QA Reference Centre to collect and validate the reports for data quality and data completeness so that the Department of Health can be sure they are an accurate representation of the performance of the NHSBSP. The KC62 reports form the basis against which the majority of NHSBSP standards are measured. These data are therefore important to a screening service, as these are what their overall performance is evaluated against. The results of the KC62 reports are published by the Breast Screening QA Reference Centre in a booklet entitled ‘Outcome Measures’.

Key points from the 2006/07 data for the nine breast screening services in the West Midlands are:

  • 228,968 women were invited for screening
  • 179,241 women were screened – an uptake rate of 78.7%
  • 7,191 women were recalled to an assessment clinic
  • 1,398 breast cancers were detected – 81.5% were invasive.

Some of the inner-city services have difficulties with uptake. This is more noticeable in women invited for their first screen. The Regional Health Promotion Group has developed a non-attender questionnaire looking at the reasons for non-attendance, and a GP information pack has been developed to send out to each general practice before women are invited for screening.
