All women registered with a GP and aged 50 - 70 are routinely invited for breast screening. The woman’s details are downloaded from the national population register (Exeter system) and generally each general practice is screened in turn. The length of time between a woman’s screens should be no more than 36 months.
Women who are older than the screening age are encouraged to self refer for screening.
Women receive an invitation, stating a date, time and location for their screening appointment. Women are generally invited to a mobile screening van, which is moved periodically as each area of the service’s catchment area is screened.
Women can telephone the screening office and ask for their appointment to be rearranged if it is inconvenient.
If women have mobility problems, they can request to be screened at the hospital site which will allow easier access.
