Incidence, Mortality & Survival Modules

The CIS can be used to monitor trends in cancer incidence, mortality and survival and to compare different areas within the West Midlands. Users can select a range of analyses and variables to produce tables, graphs and basic maps.

To view incidence and mortality data a health area is selected: West Midlands Region, Primary Care Trust, Health Authority, Local Authority or Ward level and the type of data: numbers & crude (age specific) rates, directly age standardised rates/ratio or quinary age profiles. Variables can be selected from drop down menus: cancer site, diagnosis years, area, sex and age group as required. The type of analysis can then be selected from the Analyses menu: trends, compare sexes or compare areas.

Relative survival is produced in a similar way for the West Midlands and PCTs with the additional feature of analysis by Townsend bands to show differences between affluent and deprived groups. Data can be presented as trends over time, comparisons or survival curves.

Where appropriate, data are presented with 95% confidence intervals to aid in the comparison of rates.
