The West Midlands Health GIS Service

Overview

History of the Health GIS Service

Following a water contamination incident in Worcester in 1994, the West Midlands Regional Health Authority proposed the establishment of a regional service, based on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to assist in the surveillance of such environmental incidents and potential hazards in the future. The establishment of such a service was also seen to present an opportunity to improve the co-ordination and integration of data sets useful for public health surveillance across the region.

The Health GIS Service currently operates within the West Midlands Cancer Intelligence Unit where it is able to integrate health, socio-demographic and environmental data for use in epidemiological studies and health service analyses. The service makes use of geographic and non-geographic data sets available nationally and locally to commerce and the academic community. The service is able to respond to ad hoc requests for maps and information and can provide spatial analytical services to support research initiatives within the NHS.

Our Strategy

  • Identify, develop and apply complex geographic analyses to address key public health policy needs.
  • Develop Research and Information activities by undertaking collaborative work with other health professionals.
  • Develop and support the PHASE internet mapping site to provide access to a wide variety of quality assured health and health related data.
  • Develop capacity and capability amongst health professionals to carry out basic geographic activities.
  • Provide advice, support and training based on our knowledge and expertise in GIS, Internet Mapping Services and related issues.
