2011 West Midlands Introduction to Public Health Intelligence Course
At the beginning of 2010 the West Midlands Public Health Observatory (WMPHO) ran its first ‘Introduction
to Public Health Intelligence’ training course. As a member of the Association of Public Health
Observatories (APHO), WMPHO based the course syllabus on the 2008 APHO Public Health Intelligence
training course, covering knowledge and skills up to level 6 of the Public Health Skills and Careers
Framework. Following feedback from last year the course has been improved further. This course includes
interactive and practical sessions delivered by highly skilled WMPHO staff and other external public
health specialists from across the West Midlands region.
This course aims to help meet the public health skills and knowledge needs of analysts in PCTs,
the SHA and local authorities. Although it is aimed at analysts relatively new to public health, some of
the sessions may also be of benefit to other public health specialists.
The course was originally developed by the Association of Public Health Observatories (APHO) and has
been improved and updated by the West Midlands Public Health Observatory (WMPHO) staff and other public
health specialists from the West Midlands region.
It is comprised of 17 individual sessions that will take place between January and June 2011.
(See schedule for full list of dates). All the sessions will be held at the
West Midlands Public Health Observatory.
The course is free of charge and primarily aimed at early career analysts in public health intelligence
or to fill gaps in knowledge and skills of more experienced staff. Participants should have basic IT
skills, including the use of excel.
It is expected that the course may be oversubscribed and therefore places are limited initially to 1
per Primary Care Trust, with a few for other organisations. To be nominated for a place either on the
whole course or for specific sessions please contact your Head of Public Health Intelligence or
equivalent.
As the 2011 course progresses downloads of relevant materials will be added below. To access content
from last year’s course please see the 2010 West Midlands Introduction to Public
Health Intelligence page.
